Capturing the Capitol: The Photography of J.H. Scotford

John Harvey Scotford worked as a photographer in Michigan from 1864 to 1881 in Union City, Lawrence, Bay City, Wenona, Kalamazoo, and Lansing, and continued his career across the nation through Wisconsin, Missouri, Minnesota, Washington, Oregon, and California, for the rest of his life until 1919. With more than five decades of experience in photography, Scotford made his mark in each new city in which he set up shop. Perhaps his most important accomplishment was shooting the interior of the newly dedicated Michigan State Capitol in January 1879. This program will cover Scotford’s entire life and career and is vividly illustrated with his works, from portraiture to commercial views and his extensive Capitol portfolio.
